Search Engine Optimization refers to making sure your website is fundamentally set up to be found in the search engines. As the saying goes, you can have the best website in the world, but if no one can find it, then what good is it??

Because there are only 10 spot on the first page and there are more than 10 big companies offering that. And chances are there are SEO consultants currently working on keeping the major companies coming up for that keyword.

However, if you wanted to come up for 'Pet Supplies Virginia Beach' that's a different story. And it's certainly more plausible to accomplish in a quicker amount of time. And the interesting thing is the local searches are much more relevant and more likely to be a better lead for your company anyway.

So here's the question you will want to ask about your company if SEO is right for you:

If you type in the major local searches for your company,
Does your company come up on the first page? Second page? 10th page?

Where does your company come up in the search engines?

If you're already coming up on the first page for a variety of different keywords searches (i.e., pet supplies virginia beach, dog toys virignia beach, cat litter virginia beach, etc.), then you probably don't need an SEO person, per se. Unless you want to be #1.

BUT...if you do some searches in the 3 major search engines (Google, Yahoo! & MSN), and you don't come up, then consider SEO, which if done correctly should pay for itself in no time.
