Keywords are the words people type into the search engines (like Yahoo or Google) to search for something, anything. For any one keyword there are TONS of related keywords that need to be researched to help provide an optimal branding image in the search engines.

Depending on the competition for that particular keyword, it can be an easy process to come up high in the search engines or an expensive and time consuming process. Depending on your goal and level of commitement to the project, either are worth it.

For example, to come up for "Purple Dogs in Virginia Beach", that would be easy. Believe it or not Google came up with 1.5 million websites with the words or some variation "Purple Dogs in Virginia Beach". But even with all those sites, if you created a site for that keyword specifically, it would be easy to come up high in the search engines because there is no specific competition for that keyword.

Now for "car" or "cell phone". Good luck! It would cost thousands and maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars to even begin to attempt coming up for a highly competitive search phrase like that. Would it be worth it? Sure would, especially if you sold cars or cell phones.

At any one time there are only 10 spaces open on the first page of a search engine and that's where you want to be - on the first page.

Fortunately there are ways to ethically come up for variatinos of your main keyword and depending on your patience and budget eventually your primary keyword.

While you're waiting for the natural organic free search engine rankings, then that's what PPC is all about. You can buy your way into the search engines as a sponsored listing. Depending on the category and competition that could a viable thing to do or not. It would require research for sure.
